Gheens Recital Hall on the campus of Campbellsville University is the home of all student recitals, staff recitals, endless musical events, and even events . The lighting system was original, and was in dire need of attention. Many lights were out, the dimmer rack was dying, and the whole system was far from energy efficient. Long story short, it needed replacing. JCA decided to implement one of their newest brands for the house light system, The Light Source. The Light Source company makes all of their fixtures and parts for them in their factory, in the US, and have a 10 year warranty on them, period. As for quality and output, there is no competition. For the theatrical lighting, JCA used a mixture of 6” and 8” full color fresnels to not only bring warm white light to the stage but also wash it in color. The Light Source pendants above the stage were also full color. All of this needed to have simple control, yet an extensive range of flexibility for lighting musicals, operas, and more. So JCA installed three Doug Fleener Preset 10 wall stations for easy recall of 10 presets that could be custom assigned. So for your standard recital or meeting, the desired lighting preset is just one button away. However, if more control is desired, pulling up the JANDS Vista software on the new 21” iMac disables the stations, and gives full control over every fixture in the room.
As for audio, the speakers and console had been replaced in the last ten years, but while the speakers were fine, the amps powering them were original, and the console was in need of repair as well. The new Allen&Heath SQ5 console fit the bill perfectly It was small, as space in the booth was tight, but it had the processing power to mix 48 channels and 12 mixes if needed, not to mention it could be controlled via mobile device or tablet. The new Powersoft Ottocanali 8K4 properly amplified the PA with room to spare, as well as powering the monitors, booth monitors, and lobby pa, with processing, all in 2U rack spaces. Four Shure QLXD combo units including handhelds and bodypacks finished the system, complete with rechargeable batteries and charging stations. Lastly, projection was something that if ever needed, had to be drug in and set up using a mobile solution. Now wad the time to change that. While the new iMac went it to control lighting, it would now serve as the control for projection as well. A bright, 8000 lumen laser projector was installed, and a 188” diagonal 16:9 electric screen tucked behind the top curtain façade became the new display, all controllable from the booth. A 75” stage display was mounted above the booth for performers and professors, and an active HDBaseT wall plate was installed on stage so that presentations could be fed from there as well.
